Lifestyle Shoot// The HealthLady + Mini Interview

9/5/11

We recently spent a weekend with the healthlady and her husband. We photographed their lifestyle for Nancy's websitefacebook+twitter pages. We spent the entire weekend exploring what it's like to live closer to nature and to live directly "off the grid." It was a humbling experience for both of us. Most of the food consumed throughout the weekend was directly from the garden/greenhouse. We also enjoyed fresh eggs from their free-roaming chickens. It was a memorable weekend!  Below are a few questions I asked Nancy about her job and her way of life. Kim
Nancy/(ROHP/RNCP)Holistic Nutrition Coach + the creator of The Fat Burning Detox & Naturally End Your Sugar & Food Cravings programs.

What do you love most about your job?

I love to teach what I live on a daily basis. Just that by itself is very fulfilling! I love individual and group coaching. I also enjoy interviewing health experts from around the world.

What is your reason for living closer to nature? The main reason, is more freedom and less stress! This is why, a few years ago, we decided to move the business to our new home, a cottage in Bancroft, Ontario. We are now working and playing in a natural environment that is both healing and nurturing. At the cottage, my husband and I enjoy living "off the grid" and working with nature to supply all of our power. We're surrounded by the beauty of nature—a lush forest of vibrant trees—and we add to this natural setting with our organic garden. My husband is always planning new "green" projects on the property. It's our way of improving our organic style of living. One of my husband's latest projects is building a root cellar so we can keep our produce fresh in a temperature-controlled environment. It's no wonder people call me a "tree hugger" and "health nut"!

What piece of advice would you give someone who is trying to better their eating habits?
A healthy diet needs to be something we can follow for our entire life. It usually involves a positive lifestyle change. A few things I would suggest to do now:
*Use high-quality flax seed oil, high-quality olive oil, and high-quality coconut oil. Incorporate these oils into your diet, and remove the soybean, canola, sunflower, safflower, and peanut oils.
* Stay away from anything that’s been hydrogenated.
* Eat less sugar!
* Eliminate wheat and dairy - or limit those products in your diet
* Eat more fresh organic fruits and vegetables.
* If you eat animal products, keep it to a minimum and look for both organic and grass fed. This will ensure the grass that the animals graze on has not been treated with synthetic fertilizers or herbicides.
* Get on a good vitamin supplement program.
Finally, work with a nutritionist, health coach, or health practitioner to get proper guidance.
